Note from Ian:
Since this venue is local I decided to give it a whirl.
The teacher Graham is already a respected and established dance instructor with whom I've enjoyed ballroom tuition in the past.  Salsa
night is Friday with an improvers class from 8.30pm -9pm and a beginners class from 9-9.30pm with a club until 11pm.  Tuition time may not be long but Graham is a pro and focuses on a smaller number of moves and steps and puts more emphasis on technical correctness which I believe is lacking from too many classes at the moment.  The club may not be Salsa Fusion in size  and number of people (ca 40) but the friendliness and enthusiasm of  the crowd makes for  a great night.  If you're an experienced salsero you may be frustrated as the general level is beginners/ improvers- forget your LA freestyle or your New York Mambo shines,  I was duly told by an "expert" Czech girl of about 5 weeks tuition that this isn't salsa and did I know the basics!!! - if she sticks with salsa I want to be around when the humble pie comes out....I'll cut  her a big slice!

Bar Cuba

Kensington High Street, London. High Street Kensington Tube Station
Nick ReesMany thanks, Nick!
Bar Cuba is an atmospheric and long-established club featuring Latin Music.  It is situated on Kensington High Street opposite Hyper Hyper. DJ's - Ara and Dave Hucker et al - and well-established salsa classes run by Elli Galvani and her team.  For salsa aficionados the best club nights are Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which focus on salsa with the odd merengue thrown in for good measure.  salsa classes are held at four levels - beginners, improvers, intermediate and advanced on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (with the exception of no advanced class on Tuesday.)

Classes start at 7:30 p.m. for beginners/improvers and 8:30 p.m. for intermediate/advanced. The club starts up when the classes are finished at around 9:45 p.m. onwards until late. I'd recommend this venue highly for all levels.
For information, phone 0171 938 4137
Note from Ian: The club is a friendly and intimate venue and draws some of the best dancers in London so there is a great ambience to the place.

Bar Feeva

 229 Cranbrook Road, Ilford, Essex

For more info phone Nelson on 0958 313381 or 0181 350 6612, or his dance partner Esther on 07931 783385.

Bar Lorca

261 Brixton Road, Brixton SW9 (Brixton tube station)
Fridays and Saturdays
Classes 7.30-9.30 p.m., then club till 3 a.m.  Entrance: 6 pounds for one lesson, 7 pounds for both (including club), club 3 pounds before 10 p.m.,
5 pounds after.  For information, call 0171 794 6021.

Note from Anna:  A very busy club in an area where a lot of Latin Americans and Africans live, thus there are many "natural" dancers.  At the same time, as there are advanced classes and there has been plenty of advertising, you'll also see many non-Latin people, who also dance very well.  The club makes part of a Spanish restaurant, I've heard very positive opinions about the food, too.

Bar Madrid

 WINSLEY STREET, LONDON, W1
Tuesdays
: Salsa Fiesta
7-8pm Beginners/Improvers Classes
8-9pm Improvers / Intermediates Classes
9pm - 10.30pm salsa club
Wednesdays: Seriously salsa, Classes from 7p.m., club from 9p.m. till late
Thursdays: Beginners' Night, Classes from 7p.m., club from 9p.m. till late
Note from Anna: They don't play too much salsa on
Thursdays.
Entrance is free before 9 p.m.,  then entrance is £3.

Bar Mambo -Guildford

3 Onslow St., Guildford, Surrey

Thursdays.

Salsa and merengue until 01.30-02.00. The dancers are good salseros in the main, however a few penguins pop down from the club above (which is linked) and try to dance. The dance floor is not big enough to move comfortably and accommodate the 50-100 or so that regularly attend. The adjacent restaurant inside the bar is very good too.  (free before 21.00) and the dance classes starting at 18.30 until 21.00 split into two sessions, beginners and intermediates.
Note from Anna:  I have received a less favourable response about this club, and, what's worse, the person who contacted me about it had gone there after having read Sean's review.  Obviously everything is relative, so the best thing is for you to judge by yourself.
For more info contact Sean on the above Email link.

Bar Rumba

Shaftesbury Avenue, near Trocadero Centre, Piccadilly Tube Station
Tuesdays,
9:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.
Note From Ian:
It's that man Elder Sanchez again! Even though it gets quite busy, I can highly recommend it here. There are lessons by Elder and Co from 7-9pm and club 'til 2pm. Great music, friendly crowd and all in the centre of London - check it out! Entry to club costs £4.

Bar Salsa

96 Charing Cross Road, Leicester Square Tube
Monday: El Mas Latino (salsa for all tastes)
Thursday: NU Latino (new style salsa and Cuban timba)
Entrance
free before 9 p.m. if you are not going to take part in the classes, otherwise £5 each class but then you don't pay for the cloakroom.
For information, phone 0171 379 3277.
Note from Ian: The "El Mas Latino" night is pure dynamite.  Great music and dancing plus live bands too!  Not to be missed if you're in the area.
This venue is so "in your face" you can't miss it. The best night to go for salsa and avoid office parties prancing around the dance floor like drunken penguins is
Monday.

Bar Tiempo

Above La Finca Spanish restaurant, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel or
King's Cross Tube Station

Note from Ian: This venue is perhaps one of the most established in London and one of the most popular. There is salsa Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with classes most nights (usually 7-9pm, different teachers each night). Whilst the DJs are excellent, it becomes very packed Fridays and Saturdays and at times almost impossible to dance. Prices vary between £3-5 for club entry.
Wednesdays is for a great night out. If you want to combine eating out with dancing this venue is not a bad choice.
For more information, phone (0171) 272-1809, 0171 794 6021 or (0958) 313-143.

Club Sabroso in conjunction with the London Borough of Waltham Forest are now running a monthly Salsa night at
Lloyds Park Theatre (Winns Terrace, off Forest Road, Walthamstow).
Admission is 5 pounds and the proceedings start at 9pm until 1.00am.

Every Tuesday. This is  the best Salsa venue in this part of London.  The actual venue is modern with a wooden dance floor and it is easily accessible by rood and tube. There are lessons between 7.30 and 9.00pm for the levels from beginners to intermediates. After 9.00pm, there is dancing until 11pm.  Very often there are party nights when
there is usually either a band or a dance performance and these are
well attended.

El Barco Latino

Victoria Embankment, Temple Tube Station
Entry free before 9.30p.m for diners and drinkers, and then £5 cover (except for diners).

Note from Ian: As the name suggests, this is a boat (now two due to expansion) moored on the river Thames near the centre. Principally a Colombian Restaurant, there are 4 dance floors on the two boats and a very lively venue Fri's and Sat's (Dancing normally starts about 10p.m). If you want an authentic atmosphere this is the place to go.  Again, a great place for eating out and dancing.
Note from Anna: I keep hearing from people that it is more of a Latin hangout than a salsa club, some people even say it feels like a singles bar.  Some girls have complained about men trying too hard to pick them up (to put it mildly).  I finally went there after not having been there for 4 years, and did not see any of this. It must be the result of a broad advertising campaign made by the owners in the local press.  Out of the 4 dance floors (I have only noticed 3, but the fourth one must be at the other boat, where I didn't go this time), two are with exclusively Latin music and one is, as my Italian friends put it, a "normal disco".
Out of the two floors with Latin music, one is on the same deck as the restaurant and is quite crowded, including a lot of non-dancers, while the other one only has a little bar and attracts more good dancers.  According to the advertising, El Barco Latino is open every day of the week but I have yet to see what is going on there on weekdays.
